This trip will introduce you to the skills required to lead excellent and well managed backpacking trips. Skills taught will include logistics, food/gear prep, map and compass, risk management and more. This is a time to grow your outdoor leadership abilities and bond with awesome people who share a love for the outdoors.

Introduction

On this ODL Guide Training trip, we'll be headed out to San Jacinto, for a full weekend of backpacking. We will be learning all of the skills that you need in order to lead a successful backpacking trip with the ODL program. This will include survival skills such as map and compass, building a shelter, and outdoor cooking, as well as necessary skills to enhance your outdoor leadership abilities. This will be an awesome time of adventure and bonding with fellow outdoor lovers. Join us for a weekend of fun, food, bonding, and honing in some of your outdoors skills!

About the Trip & Itinerary

Week of trip: We will have a pretrip meeting where we can meet one another, go over trip details, and get packs and gear.

Friday(Day 1):  Meet at the arc at 6 Pm. We will drive out to Idyllwild and spend the night under the stars.

Saturday (Day 2): We will wake up and begin our beautiful hike. Once we get to camp  we will work on backpack skills, enjoy some group fun and bonding, and another spectacular night under the stars.

Sunday (Day 3): Hike out, drive, get back to campus around 5 pm.

Physical

Be prepared to hike several miles with a backpack. This will be a moderate hike with the focus being on time to master skills rather then racking up the miles. This trip is perfect for both beginning and experienced backpackers.

Fitness rating:  3 out of 5 difficulty

Safety & Risk Management

Wear shoes that you are comfortable walking in for all three days (this will probably be hiking boots, or some other shoe like that). Be prepared with warm layers for night time and plenty of sun protection for the day.
