Introduction

Potato Chip Rock is one of the most noteworthy and photographed places in San Diego. Towering over Lake Poway Recreational Area just south of Escondido, this rock shaped like a potato chip is something you truly have to see for yourself to believe. Climbing to the top offers views of rolling hills in the area and on a clear day can show views all the way out to the ocean.

About the Trip & Itinerary

Looking to beat the heat, the group will meet in the ARC at PLNU at 7:00am and drive approximately 45 minutes to the trailhead. With a hike of a total of 7.5 miles, it will take approximately 2-3 hours to reach the top while taking breaks and going at an appropriate pace for the group. After spending time at the top taking pictures, the group will hike back down to the vans. Expect to arrive at PLNU before 4:30pm. 

Physical

With a total of approximately 7.5 miles and an incline of 2300 feet, this is a full-day hiking excursion and is moderately strenuous. For a full description of the trail, visit AllTrails.com. It can be physically exhausting in the high heat and walking uphill the first half of the trail. There will be frequent water breaks and a pace that is appropriate for all participants.

Safety & Risk Management

The main risks of this trip involve the temperature and sun exposure. There is little shade along the trail; it is essential to remain hydrated and maintain continuous sun protection to avoid sunburn. Another risk is the trail terrain because of the many rocks along the trail; it is important to wear sturdy shoes and practice caution with footing while hiking.

Packing List

● sturdy/comfortable shoes: wear shoes that you are comfortable walking around in and are good when footing may be unstable. There are rocks along the trail

● small backpack to carry lunch, water, jacket

● water bottle: at least 32 ounces

● sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
