The Way Wilderness Orientation Experience

This spectacular wilderness orientation is for First Year and Transfer undergraduate students.  In this trip you will develop close relationships while exploring California's scenic wilderness areas. "The Way" will challenge you at new heights to prepare you to begin your PLNU college journey. Food, outdoor gear, instruction, and transportation to and from PLNU is included.

The Way: Sequoia (7 days):

Our itinerary starts on campus where we will begin the group experience and prepare personal equipment. We will then leave the San Diego sky-line for the high alpine forest, remote lakes, and panoramic views. Next we will backpack through the Sierra Nevada Mountains for five days. There is truly no better way to start college than a journey through the wilderness with a group of fellow travelers.  Check out the videos below that were shot and edited by The Way Sequoia Participants.

The Way: San Onofre (3 days):

Our itinerary starts on campus where we will begin the group experience and prepare personal equipment. We'll head north to the warm surf of San Onofre, CA. For the next 3 days you'll experience surfing with skilled instructors. Each night we'll gather around the fire for stories and the warmth of new friendships.

The Way Goals:

  • Create a community of belonging to provide support for your transition into college

  • Empower students to challenge themselves while compassionately connecting with others

  • Create opportunities for students to gain self-awareness

  • Connect to God's Creation through activity and reflection

On the last night, we went around and privately told each other about a time we appreciated that person and why. It was a time filled with love and affirmation and my heart swelled with the beauty of it. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to intentionally express to others why I loved them, and it was a blessing to receive that back.
— First Year Student-- Boston, MA.
I think that it was an experience that will be a constant reminder not to give up when things get tough, and that working hard and pushing myself is rewarding.
— First Year Student --Huntington Beach, CA.
I think this experience will be monumental in my transition to Point Loma if for no other reason than to have a friendly face to sit with in the cafeteria in those first few weeks of radical change an unfamiliar territory.
— First Year Student (Transfer) --Orange County, CA
I believe the transition will be much smoother now. I went from not knowing anybody to now feeling like I’m going into all this as part of a small family.
— First Year Student --Chula Vista, CA
